Born in Germany, raised a good portion of my youth there but under the American Army flag, I agree there is a somber seriousness that does seem to hold people back from happiness. As an American living socially distanced and happy, I see why most are not. I live in a world of miracles and phenomena, Mii, the "I"s that make up the person I became when I finally matured in my late sixties, savoring my second youthful and painfree childhood far more than the first time around. I was angry for the first 55 years, and through great sorrow found great joy. Perspicuity turned out to be the key and gratitude the power to turn the key that unlocks the door to inner peace, and thus prosperity like I never found before. Kudos to your travels and perspicuity.
